The global economic landscape is poised for a dramatic shift. As our accompanying chart illustrates, the dominance of “Western” nations, a staple of the past 500 years, is expected to change significantly over the next few decades.

In just 52 years, the world’s two largest economies are expected to be China and India. By 2075 only 5 of the top 15 economies will hail from what we currently consider the “West.” The shift is driven by powerful demographic trends, indicating a substantial shift in global economic and geopolitical influence.

The explosive growth of the Chinese economy demonstrates the immense potential of applying growth friendly policies to populous nations with modest per capita GDP. This economic leverage is set to be replicated by India, Nigeria, Indonesis and Egypt which are forecasted to become major global players by 2075.

Technology has the potential to drive productivity and growth in currently lesser-developed nations with large and fast-growing populations. This dynamic global environment is likely to make the 2020s a decade defined by volatility. Shifting trends and market fluctuations will be more prevalent, presenting risks but also great opportunities for prepared investors.
